In addition, students will study a further two compulsory modules which require the completion of course work:
1. Introduction to Studies in Education. Topics covered include:
• The Irish Primary School Curriculum
• Theory of Teaching and Learning.
2. Students will spend time in a school setting observing and participating in the life of the school. Insights gained from this experience will be documented using a reflective journal. Students who successfully complete the course and fulfil the minimum entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education will be offered a place on the Bachelor of Education (primary teaching) degree programme in MIC.
Minimum Entry Requirements
All applicants must have completed the Leaving Certificate and must have passed at least three subjects in the Leaving Certificate at either higher or ordinary level, including Math- ematics. In addition to the three passes, applicants must have a C3/H5 in an honours subject. Intending applicants are requested to carefully read the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education from the Department of Education & Skills (available at www.mic.ul.ie/maturestudents/documents/teachereducationadultlearners.pdf), and take particular note of the requirement for three honours and three passes in the Leaving Certificate. The essential subjects are an honour in Irish and passes in English and Maths.
Cost
€400 per annum payable in two instalments of €200 at the commencement of each semester. There is no charge if you are in receipt of social welfare, on a jobs initiative, on a Community Employment scheme or are a medical card holder. €1000 per annum for graduates (those with an existing degree).
