Teaching
The goals of Mathematics Education Courses provided to both undergraduate and postgraduate student teachers are:
- to explore and understand mathematics concepts specific to primary school
- to demonstrate best practices in the teaching of specific mathematical content areas
- to build on students’ foundational ideas of teaching
The purpose of courses offered as part of teacher preparation programs is to provide future teachers with the knowledge and experiences to develop activities that foster communication, reasoning, and reflection in the primary classroom. Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are based on current research and theories about how children learn mathematics; and incorporate professional recommendations and best teaching practices throughout the course design. Throughout all courses specific mathematics concepts are examined through reference to curricula, texts, models, software, and current research. Strategies and methodologies for the teaching of mathematics are presented.
